AI interviewer

An AI interviewer for every candidate who clears screening

HireQwik's AI interviewer runs a 10-20 minute voice interview in the browser and hands recruiters the recording, transcript and evidence.

What is an AI interviewer?

An AI interviewer is software that holds a structured first-round interview with a candidate by voice, asks follow-up questions based on their answers, and scores each answer against a rubric. HireQwik's runs in the browser for 10 to 20 minutes and gives recruiters the recording, transcript and evidence behind every score.

It is different from a one-way video interview, where candidates record answers to fixed questions and nobody asks a follow-up, and from a chatbot that only collects form answers. The value is in the conversation: an adaptive AI interviewer can ask what a candidate did first, and why.

How a HireQwik AI interview works

From job description to a scored profile, with your team approving each step that matters.

  1. Upload the job description

HireQwik drafts knock-out questions, role questions and a scoring rubric. Your team edits them before anything runs.

  2. Choose who gets interviewed

Candidates who pass resume screening get a booking link, or your recruiters approve them by hand.

  3. Candidates book a slot

They pick a time, get a calendar invite and join from a browser. Nothing to install.

  4. The AI runs the interview

Knock-outs first, then role questions with follow-ups, then the candidate's own questions.

  5. Recruiters review the profile

Recording, transcript, per-question evaluation and a recommended tier, minutes after the call ends.

What an AI interviewer asks: an example

The questions come from your job description. Here is the kind of first round HireQwik drafts for a customer success role, and what the interviewer listens for in each answer.

Can you start within 30 days?
Knock-out. A yes, or a date. A clear no ends the interview politely after a few minutes.
Tell me about a customer escalation you handled.
What they checked first, who they kept informed, and how it ended. The follow-up asks why they started there.
How would you explain a technical fix to someone non-technical?
Plain steps instead of jargon, and a check that the customer understood.
You have 40 open tickets on Monday morning. Where do you start?
A stated rule for priority, such as customer impact over ticket age, and what they would tell the customers who wait.

What recruiters see after the interview

One profile per candidate: the recording, the transcript, an evaluation of every question with the candidate's own words behind it, and a recommended tier. Your recruiters review the top of the list and make the call.

Strong Go, Go, On Hold or No Go, each with the evidence that produced it

AI interviewer vs a recruiter phone screen

The first round does the same job either way. What changes is who gets screened, when, and what you keep afterwards.

Roles teams screen with an AI interviewer

Customer-facing, technical and early-career roles with many applicants per opening. The questions and rubric come from your own job description, so the interview fits the role.

  • Customer success
  • Inside sales
  • Technical support
  • Software engineering
  • Product management
  • HR and recruiting
  • Campus and graduate hiring

When an AI interviewer is not the right fit

It does the most good where many candidates apply for the same role. It helps less in these cases:

  • Senior and executive hires, where the first conversation is also about selling the role to the candidate.
  • Roles decided by a hands-on test, such as a trade skill. Use the AI interview for communication and the basics, then test the skill.
  • Interviews in other languages. HireQwik interviews in English today.
  • Rounds of a handful of candidates, where a recruiter call is quicker to arrange than a new role setup.

Guardrails in every interview

An AI interviewer earns trust by being predictable. Every candidate for a role gets the same structured questions, and every score shows the answer it came from.

Recruiters make the decision; the AI recommends
Auto-reject and auto-advance are per-role opt-ins, off by default
Tab switches and camera-off events are logged for review
Candidates get time to ask their own questions at the end

Questions buyers ask about AI interviewers

How long does an AI interview take?

Usually 10 to 20 minutes. Knock-out questions come first, so a candidate who does not meet a must-have requirement finishes in a few minutes. The rest of the time goes to role questions with follow-ups, and to the candidate's own questions at the end.

Can candidates take an AI interview outside working hours?

Yes. Candidates pick a slot from the times you open, including evenings and weekends, and get a calendar invite with the interview link. In our India hiring pipelines, 39.4 percent of 1,705 self-booked interviews were outside 9-to-6, and 9 PM was the most popular hour.

How is an AI interview scored?

Each answer is evaluated against the rubric built from your job description, and the interview gets an overall score out of 10. By default 8 and above is Strong Go, 6 and above is Go, 4.5 and above is On Hold, and anything lower is No Go. Recruiters see the recording, transcript and per-question evaluation behind every score.

Can recruiters change the interview questions?

Yes. HireQwik drafts the knock-out questions, role questions and scoring rubric from your job description, and your team reviews and edits them before any candidate is interviewed. During the interview the AI also asks follow-up questions based on what each candidate actually says.

Does an AI interviewer replace recruiters?

No. It runs the first-round conversation so recruiters spend their time on the candidates worth meeting. The AI recommends a tier, your recruiters make the decision and can override any recommendation, and auto-reject stays off unless your team switches it on for a role.

How does an AI interviewer handle rehearsed or AI-written answers?

By asking follow-ups. A rehearsed answer holds up for one question, but not when the interviewer asks what the candidate did first, why, and what changed. Tab switches and camera-off events during the interview are also logged for the recruiter to review.

Is it legal to use an AI interviewer in the US?

Using AI in hiring is legal in the US, but some cities and states add rules. New York City requires an independent bias audit and advance notice to candidates before an automated tool is used to screen them, and Illinois requires employers to tell candidates when AI is used in hiring decisions. HireQwik keeps a recruiter as the decision-maker. It has not completed an independent bias audit, so talk to us before using it for New York City roles, and check the rules where you hire with your counsel.
