Campus recruitment, from 3,000 applications to a shortlist
A campus drive breaks at the screening step: hundreds of students per college, one recruiter, a few days. HireQwik reads every resume against the job description, interviews every student who clears it, and hands your team a ranked shortlist with the evidence.
What is campus recruitment?
Campus recruitment is hiring students and recent graduates through their colleges, usually for entry-level roles. An employer works with a college's placement cell, students apply, and the employer shortlists, tests and interviews them over a few days, often for several colleges at once. Offers usually go out before the students graduate.
It comes in three shapes. On-campus drives run through one college's placement cell. Pool drives bring students from several colleges to one shared drive. Off-campus hiring is open to any student who applies directly. All three end up at the same place: hundreds or thousands of applications for a few roles, and a team that has to screen them fast.
How a campus drive works
The rounds vary by company. Most drives in India follow this shape.
Pre-placement talk and applications
The company presents the role; eligible students apply through the placement cell or a form.
Shortlist on eligibility and resume
Branch, scores and the resume are checked against the role. This is where volume first bites.
Test or first-round interview
An aptitude or skills test, a group discussion, or a structured first-round interview.
Technical and HR interviews
The panel meets only the students who cleared the earlier rounds.
Offers and joining
Offers go out, the placement cell gets the results, and joining dates follow graduation.
Where campus drives break
Sourcing is rarely the problem on campus. Screening is. Most teams hit a wall near 500 candidates, because that is where phone-screen hours run out.
- The hours do not add up. At 10 to 15 minutes a call, screening 3,000 applicants by phone takes 500 to 750 hours.
- Most applications do not fit. Across 66,873 resumes HireQwik has scored, about half matched less than 30 percent of what the role asked for.
- Students are free in the evening. In our India pipelines, 39.4 percent of 1,705 self-booked interviews were taken outside 9-to-6, and 9 PM was the most popular hour.
- Every college compares you. Students hear back slowly or never, and the placement cell remembers which employers made their students wait.
How HireQwik screens a campus drive
Set the role up once from the job description. Then every student is read and interviewed the same way, whichever college they came from.
Students who score well can be invited to the interview straight away, or after a recruiter approves them. Your team makes every decision. More on the two steps: AI resume screening and the AI interviewer.

Campus hiring platforms, by the job they do
"Campus hiring software" covers several kinds of tools. Most employers use two or three together.
| Kind | What it does | Examples | HireQwik |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campus networks and placement | Reaches colleges and students, runs outreach, competitions and placement workflows | Superset, Unstop, Internshala | No. It works on the applications you already have |
| Assessments | Aptitude, coding and skills tests, often proctored | Mercer Mettl, HackerEarth | No skills tests. Pairs with your test |
| Resume screening | Reads every application against the role and ranks the fit | TurboHire, Zappyhire | Yes, with the resume line behind each requirement |
| AI interviews | Runs a structured first-round interview by voice, video or chat | Sapia (chat), Talview, InCruiter, HireVue | Yes, a voice interview in the browser, in English |
| College hiring suites | End-to-end campus workflows, often with services | HirePro | No. It works alongside your ATS |
Examples come from each company's own website, checked 14 to 19 October 2026. Detailed comparisons: HirePro, Talview, Zappyhire, InCruiter, TurboHire, or all kinds of AI recruiting software.
What to check before choosing campus hiring software
- Can it screen a whole drive in days? Ask how many students it can interview in a day, and what happens on the busiest evening.
- Does it start from the placement cell's sheet? Re-typing applications is where drives lose a day.
- Is every college scored the same way? One rubric per role, and a way to look at each college's cohort on its own.
- What does a student see? Take the interview yourself, on a phone, on an ordinary connection.
- Which language does the interview run in? If the role does not need fluent English, check the rubric does not reward it.
- Can you explain a result to a student or a placement officer? You need the evidence behind each score, not just the score.
Production and pilot data from hiring in India, 2026
Built on drives with thousands of applicants
HireQwik was built on hiring in India, where one entry-level role can draw thousands of applicants in a week. On one 3,000-applicant drive, about 1,200 passed the resume screen, the screening phase took 1 to 2 working days instead of 6 to 10, and recruiters spent 1 to 2 hours reviewing the shortlist.

Questions employers ask about campus hiring
How many rounds does a campus drive usually have?
Most campus drives in India run three to five rounds: a resume or eligibility shortlist, an online aptitude or skills test, sometimes a group discussion, then technical and HR interviews. A first-round AI interview can replace the group discussion or the first phone round, so the panel only meets students who already cleared a structured screen.
When does campus hiring season start in India?
The official campus season opens around September, but pipelines fill earlier. National tests such as TCS NQT run cycles from July, and thousands of companies draw on those results. Plan screening capacity for July, not for the week the first college confirms a date.
What is the difference between on-campus and off-campus hiring?
On-campus hiring runs through a college's placement cell, with its eligible students. Off-campus hiring is open to students from any college who apply directly, usually through a careers page or a job board. A pool drive sits in between: several colleges send students to one shared drive.
Can one role take students from several colleges?
Yes. In HireQwik, each college's sheet can feed the same job, every student is scored on the same rubric built from the job description, and recruiters can filter the combined shortlist by college. One college's strong cohort does not change how another college's students are scored.
Is an AI interview fair to students from tier-2 and tier-3 colleges?
It can be, if the rubric scores what the role needs. HireQwik's AI interviews run in English, so if the job does not need fluent English, make sure the rubric does not quietly reward it. Every score shows the answer behind it, and recruiters make the decision.
How long does it take to screen 3,000 campus applicants?
By phone, at 10 to 15 minutes a call, 3,000 screens take 500 to 750 hours. On one 3,000-applicant HireQwik drive, the screening phase took 1 to 2 working days, and recruiters spent 1 to 2 hours reviewing a ranked shortlist instead of about 18 hours reading profiles.
